Star Wars Dawn of the Jedi

A few weeks ago the KGS had a round table discussion about the origins of the Jedi and if force ability is hereditary.  We will finally know the answers in February.  Dark Horse Comics in conjunction with Lucasfilm will publish DAWN OF THE JEDI.  A 5 issue comic book mini-series written y fan favorite - John Ostrander.

Star Wars Gaming Notes from 10/25/2011

With little backstory, the party is thrown together on a ship headed for Alderaan to claim the bounty on an assassin droid sent to kill Senator Ilan Tah. Only problem? We have no idea what this droid looks like. As a cover, we're suppose to pick up some wine. Should be simple enough. I'm playing a Wookie bounty hunter so I've practiced my grunts and growls all week.

We land on Alderaan and they immediately lock up all of our weapons. Seems Alderaan is a peaceful planet. We begin our investigation by setting up appointments with the Senator and the winery (separately, of course). In the meanwhile, we start spitballing ideas on how to identify and stop this assassin droid. We search databases for droids recently entering the system, try to establish underworld contacts, and eventually try to tail the Senator to establish likely ambush points.

It seems that our tailing attracted some attention, however, because we were stopped by the police and detained. All of this fit into my Wookie's plan. I hoped that news of my arrest in connection with the Senator would lure out the elements who had hired the assassin droid. Unfortunately, no such luck.

When it came time to go to the winery, the wine snobs wouldn't sell us their precious wine called "Alderaan Blue Fury". So my wookie had intimidate the shop employees into selling him the wine. Once they saw his credits were good they complied with our *ahem* gentle request. We safely loaded the cargo and waited to meet with the Senator the next day.

Finally, the day arrived and we were greeted by a protocol droid. Something didn't seem right, however, when the droid took a translation device in with us to see the Senator. When we accused the droid of trying to kill the senator, he fled. Some of us pursued and apprehended the droid while the rest defused the device which turned out to be a bomb and guarded the Senator.

We collected our bounty, earned the thanks of the Senator, and headed off to deliver our wine cargo. Unfortunately, before we could leave the system, a large moon appeared around Alderaan. Tie fighters swarmed us and forced us onto what we now realized wasn't a moon at all but a fully operational battle station.

It's ALWAYS great to roleplay in the Star Wars universe... To be continued...

Star Wars Blu-Ray Friday !!!

Friday, September 16 is the release of the Star Wars Trilogy on blu-ray.
This is another historic milestone in the history of Star Wars and just wanted let everyone know I will be getting it and hope to review the movies (with the new changes) over the weekend.

I was thinking about this though and am unsure of the order that I wish to watch these in.

Should I watch them in the original order:

New Hope
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
Phantom Menance
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith

or in the actual order of when the movies occurr which would of course be:

Phantom Menance
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith
New Hope
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi

The order changes the entire focus of the saga. If I watch them in the order they originally aired then it is the story of Luke Skywalker and his life. If I watch them in the order of movie timeline then it is the story of Anakin Skywalker and his redemption.

This is an important decision and I am looking for help.

George Lucas says, "No!" To Real World AT-AT Walkers

This story is from KGS fan, Bill P.

Hundreds of volunteers have marshaled their energy to the task of recreating a real-world AT-AT Walker from the Star Wars movies for $100 million dollars. Well, they did before George Lucas *cough* *jerk* *cough* stopped them because of "intellectual property rights concerns."  Pssshhh.... And I'm sure if George Lucas directed a film that had a device in it that cured cancer he wouldn't want eager fans to build that either! Check it out: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42667952/ns/technology_and_science-innovation?GT1=43001

Star Wars fans never stop surprising me with their rabid dedication and creatively. George Lucas never ceases me amaze me by being a tool. I mean, what reason could he have for fighting this... unless... HE'S A SITH LORD! Yes, of course! Who wouldn't want the good ol' USA to have this power but a Sith Lord! It all makes sense! George is the "Emperor" - behind the scenes, manipulating, "directing" if  you will... while the whole time amassing power for himself, letting the citizens of the empire suffer!

Build that AT-AT, boys, then use it to overthrow the Sith Lord's influence over the Star Wars films so we will finally have Episodes 7-9 like we justly should!

Thanks, Bill, for bringing to light this threat to the galaxy. KGS fans, keep this stories coming... for the safety of all the known universe!

You, Too, Can Be a REAL Jedi!!! REALLY!

So, how does one become a Jedi? Aren't I, "Too old for the training?" Well, it turns out, I just have to read this book (and the three after it): http://newilluminatiprotocols.com/media/TheBookOfJedi-np.php?RSID=1146&r=jedi2

The thing is, these people are SERIOUS. I mean, SERIOUSLY serious. Here's what is says from the New Illuminati Protocols website:

"The Book of Jedi is a free publication that prepares the Initiate for training in a Jedi Academy. It has been imbued with specific thought seeds and a secret internal rhythm that will awaken an awareness of The Force within you. Simply by reading through this document in it’s entirety, certain inner preparations will be made within you. The Jedi Order has existed quietly on Earth for centuries, awaiting for this moment in history to come forward and make our training available to many more who qualify to learn the ways of The Force. In the final pages, instructions will be given to you should you choose to request additional information about formal training in one of our academies."

So look out, bullies who picked on my in high school. I'm a JEDI now and I don't take no gruff from nobody! Man, it was easier to become a Jedi than it was to bulk up on muscle like that Charles Atlas ad on the back of comic books promised me! Sweet!

Census Results: 400,000 Jedi Live in the UK

Yes, you read that title correctly. 400,000 Jedi officially live in the United Kingdom. NOT a joke. At least, that's according to a recent census done there. Don't believe me? Check out the results here: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:E29HdeCZYqwJ:paganwiccan.about.com/b/2011/02/23/you-can-still-be-a-jedi-on-englands-census.htm+you+can+be+a+jedi&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&source=www.google.com

and here: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-02-21/u-k-powerless-to-stop-jedis-witches-spoiling-2011-census.html

No wonder they won World War I and II! I'm just glad the Jedi were too preoccupied to squash our small American Rebellion in 1776.

Holy Black Lightsaber, Jedi!

Alright, I was one of those Star Wars fans. I hated Mace Windu's violet lightsaber. I've since made peace with the *shudder* purple lightsaber, but I couldn't help but notice two lightsabers from the Clone Wars CGI television show.

The first was a WHITE or SILVER lightsaber. Tera Sinube is the Jedi that carries this lightsaber. He actually has the handle of it concealed inside his walking cane. Very awesome lightsaber.

The second was a BLACK lightsaber. Pre Vizsla wields the black lightsaber. Apparently, this lightsaber is a Jedi/Sith artifact that was stolen from the Jedi Temple. Pre Vizsla isn't a Jedi or Sith - he's the head of the Mandalorian "Death Watch" terrorist group. This lightsaber is actually not round - it has an edge like a blade. Very cool looking lightsaber.

So, see - once you accept purple and yellow lightsabers, the sky is the limit. In fact, I check it out on Wookieepedia.com (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Lightsaber_crystal) and there are literally DOZENS of lightsaber colors from bronze to pink (yes, pink) to rainbow to brown. I'm fairly certain that you could collect enough different colored lightsabers to match every crayon in a 64 count Crayola crayon box.

Is this sacrilegious? Ridiculous? Silly? Unnecessary? Perhaps. But I have to tell myself it is not worth getting upset over it. A cool character is going to be cool no matter what color lightsaber you put in his hand. Except pink.

Chad Vader: Brilliant Incompetence

What would you do if you have a complete Darth Vader costume, a camera, and (apparently) unlimited access to a grocery store? Make popular YouTube videos about a loser in a Vader costume who works in a grocery store? Sorry! Somebody already beat you to it! The videos in the Chad Vader series are hilarious. Chad does, indeed, have force powers but he uses them in lame attempts to war with his arch-nemesis, Clint; impress Clarissa, the checkout girl who detests him;make the store "fully operational;" and to create a more powerful check-out laser.

The series is best when it is poking fun of the ridiculousness of its own concept. Chad hums to the tune of Darth Vader's theme song, "I have a date, Chad has a date." Chad is thwarted from striking down Clint by a banana peel. Chad calls the store manager, "master."

It is amazing the effort the people put into their YouTube videos for absolutely no pay or rewards of any kind except recognition from fans. The folks who did the Chad Vader series deserve your recognition so check them out.

Star Wars Family Guy VS Star Wars Robot Chicken

Both Family Guy and Robot Chicken have been releasing George Lucas backed Star Wars parody episodes over the past few years. Robot Chicken has released three episodes, simply titled Episodes I, II, and III. Family Guy has also released three episodes, titled Blue Harvest, Something, Something, Something Dark Side, and It's a Trap! Between the creators of the two shows there has been a healthy rivalry to outdo each other in creating the funniest Star Wars episode. So, who has won?

The approach of the two shows is completely different. Robot Chicken approaches it in its traditional sketch format. They jump freely across all six movies. One minute you're with JarJar trying to sell auto insurance, the next moment you're with Luke and Vader in a father-son dance competition. Alternately, Family Guy takes one movie at a time and literally retells the movie with startling faithfulness, taking pains to recreate exact camera angles and framing.

I found that in almost every regard, Family Guy beat Robot Chicken. You would think hopping freely around all six movies, Robot Chicken would be able to cherry-pick the best gags but quite a few of them are simply absurd and fall short of being funny. In all of the Robot Chicken Star Wars episodes only had one laugh-out-loud moment for me (it involved a jedi dropping a lightsaber on a starship). I actually found the Star Wars episodes to be less funny than a typical Robot Chicken. It's almost like they were trying too hard.

Family Guy's Star Wars episodes have a knack for integrating Family Guy conventions into the Star Wars story. There are jokes that work on so many levels, for Star Wars fans, Family Guy fans and as a social commentary. From episode to episode there are running gags that you look for (What's Meg going to be in this episode?). I found myself laughing out loud regularly and, in typical Family Guy fashion, uttering a shocked, "Oh my gosh!" at the irreverent humor ("You can't say that word! That's OUR word!") They manage to lampoon and celebrate Star Wars at the same time. I felt as if it's okay for them to make fun of Star Wars because it is so evident that they love Star Wars so much. I enjoyed these episodes more than your typical Family Guy episode. The Family Guy creative team truly reached its pinnacle with the Star Wars episodes.

So the winner? Family Guy in round one. And two. And three. They have beaten Robot Chicken in every imaginable way on this one. If you haven't checked out the Family Guy Star Wars episodes, sell your Robot Chicken collection on ebay so you can BUY, not Netflix, BUY these bad boys. You'll want to keep pulling them down off of your shelf time and time again.
